Traders reject forced weekly closure

Chitral.-- As a surprise move, the District administration announced compulsory shops closure on Sunday on the pretext of weekly holiday. Again, a silly step to hamper the already feeble trading activity in the Chitral markets. Traditionally Chitral bazaar shopkeepers open shops in the morning and close them by afternoon at Asr prayers time, giving just a few hours for shopping activity, taking out the lunch and afternoon prayers closure time. They take a holiday on requirement basis and there has not been any example of forced closure before.  It is not understandable why the administration has taken this step, as it amounts to discouraging the people from working. It is hoped that the administration would take back its order and allow the people to freely indulge in trading activities at will as has been the practice all along. --(CN report, 09 May 2010).
