Golen Gol work to start from Feb ?

LAHORE, Nov 25, 2010: Construction work on the major components of 106 MW Golen Gol Hydropower Project will start in February 2011.

Work for construction of Wapda offices and colonies for the project has already commenced and is at the advance stage of completion, said a press release issued by Wapda here on Thursday.

Construction of the dam and powerhouse will be undertaken by a joint venture SAMBU-SARCO of South Korea, while for the construction supervision consultancy, financial proposal of a joint venture comprising MS Fichtner of Germany as lead firm, a Swiss and three Pakistani companies are being evaluated and will be finalized soon.

Golen Gol Hydropower Project is a part of least-cost energy generation plan, being executed by Wapda on a priority basis to harness the indigenous hydropower resources of the country with a view to improve the ratio of hydel electricity in the national grid.

The project is located on the River Golen Gol, a major tributary of the River Mastuj in Chitral. Saudi Development Fund, Kuwait Development Fund and the OPEC Fund are providing funds to the tune of $ 107 million for the project.

On its completion, Golen Gol Hydropower Project will generate about 436 million units of electricity (Gwh) annually to earn revenue of about Rs1 billion.

Being an environment friendly hydropower project, it will help reduce dependence on expensive thermal power, thereby saving foreign exchange amounting to $34 million (equivalent to Rs2.7 billion) to the country.

According to an estimation, Golen Gob Hydropower Project will add about Rs9 billion per annum to the national economy through socio-economic uplift in the country caused by the project. --APP, 25 Nov 2010
