Musharaff’s entry into Chitral politics could be a game changer

Chitral : Former President Gen Pervez Musharaff’s decision to contest elections from Chitral after being allowed by the court to file nomination papers, has brought about a? stir in Chitral’s politics. The ‘Big Boy’s decision to jump into the fray has driven shivers down many a spine. Hitherto serious candidates for the National Assembly have started thinking whether to compete with him or withdraw from the contest.

Though Gen Musharaff has good following in Chitral due to his contribution to the Lowari tunnel project and a section of the population have particular liking for him, but the main reason which scares away the usual political players of Chitral to contest against him is something else.

Politics in Chitral like elsewhere in Pakistan is increasingly being driven by money and with money votes are bought easily up here. Chitral is considered one of the cheapest constituencies in Pakistan, where a few million are what is needed to contest elections seriously. Musharaff being one candidate who has the deepest pocket and would be likely happily willing to spend on his campaign is fully qualified to contest elections in Chitral ‘in style’.

The collateral benefit to Chitral which it would accrue on Musharaff contesting from here, would be that the constituency would invite international attention. .. CN report, 09 Jun 2018

  1. Last time also he submitted nomination papers but same were rejected later. So it is too early to say anything about his contesting elections. “There is many a slip between the cup and the lip”

  2. Musharaf Election contest from Chitral will be not a Game changer. It was five years back Chitrali acknowledged and recognized his services and elected the only MNA of his party from Chitral. Time is change and the game is now difficult. You will accept or not but every young Pakistani generation believes in accountability and transparency in fund management and good governance for the well-being of every Pakistani. NO MORE POLITICAL EXPLOITATION.

  3. CN! Couldn’t agree any more. Yes he will be a game changer in Chitral. His strong bond with this region makes him extra lovable among all sections of life. Every Chitrali who crosses tunnel must and should think for a moment as how we lived in Chitral for centuries. Moreover,we need this kind of leadership who has experience both permanent state as well as civil government. Muhsin is equally popular both nationally and internationally and Chitral will benefit naturally from his leadership,

  4. The latest reports suggest that it is quite unlikely for Musharraf to return to Pakistan, let alone the possibility of contesting elections. However, if he returns and contests, he is going to sweep it like never before. And he is going to make a lot of the other contestants look politically irrelevant, to say the least.

  5. If Chitrali are smart they would beg him to come and stand in election and give him the seat. Democracy is about who can get the most for their area. He would be great at that.

  6. Musharaf will have a clean sweep because every loyal Chitrali strongly feels that what Musharaf has done for Chitral is worth not one time vote but life time vote for him…
