‘Go Slow’ policy glaringly visible at Lowari tunnel

Chitral .. Despite the prime minister of Pakistan’s repeated assurances that the Lowari tunnel would be completed by June this year, but on ground there are no signs of that happening.

A reliable person who somehow managed to travel through the tunnel at peak working hours on a non tunnel opening day, informed?CN that he could see only a few people (about 10 in all) working at the northern mouth of the tunnel, while the rest of the eight kilometer tunnel wore a deserted look inside with no sign of recent work having being done there.

According to the reporter of his tunnel tale,?the tunnel presented a picture of neglect and disinterest. The only efficiency seen was of the security personnel?aggressively stopping?any one from coming?near the tunnel. (except the privileged ones, of course!).

It clearly?appeared that the tunnel makers are not interested in completing the project any where soon and that there is no body to ask them why?, he said?.. CN report, 03 Apr 2017.

  1. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has twice before postponed the announced inauguration date of Lowari tunnel, first in Dec 2016 and then in March 2017. Now he has categorically announced that the tunnel would be inaugurated in June 2017. We shall see whether he keeps his words or eats them for the third time.

  2. Construction work inside the tunnel seems slow and balance work to be completed before inauguration third date June 2017 seems difficult and not possible. This would lay very bad impact on NHA and on our Prime Minister and his party.

  3. You need to put extra effort to delay the opening for such a long period. Good job by the government. They really know how to use projects for political gains without caring for the concern of a common man.

  4. I travelled inside the tunnel about 10 days ago during working hours (I.e. non opening day of tunnel for traffic), I noticed that pace of work is very slow, there were only 10 labours working and only two mixture machines were found inside the tunnel. It seems difficult that tunnel would be completed before December this year. The reason could be the delaying tactics by government and to gain political benefits in next year’s general election through inauguration of tunnel a month before the deployment of care taker government.

  5. At least current PM is upto completing this project which was pending since last 4-5 decades why should not he takes political benefit it’s his right, projects like lowari tunnel, lyari expressway and New Islamabad airport which was pending and was not completed b/c of the lack of funds is going to complete this year is it not enough, i think they are performing relatively better then others
