Chitral -- The residents of Chitral town, rather the whole district,
who are end users of the Chitral bazaar bypass road have out-rightly rejected the
new plan by the C&W department to construct an
unnecessary bridge at the same place in addition to the already existing 36 ft wide
bridge on the bypass road over the Chitral gole.
Our correspondent while standing on the existing bridge asked
over two dozen passer byes both on foot and in vehicles having
different educational and social status crossing the bridge, if they
were in favour of having another bridge alongside the existing
bridge. Not a single person supported the idea. In fact all said it
was an exercise in ill-will and an excuse to gobble down government
money. In fact one pedestrian let loose a volley of curses on the
concerned department and said "what is wrong with this bridge, why
do they want to eat up government money, they think we are fools and
idiots and don't understand that there is 80 percent commission in a
bridge". One gentlemen said, "we always wake up when the damage has
been done, only to regret and fret about it, this is the first
time that we are resisting a wrong from happening in the beginning
and this is good augury for the future of Chitral".
Bye pass road users are of the opinion that the five crore rupees
ill intended to be spent on an unnecessary and potentially dangerous
bridge should instead be spent to widen the byepass road and give it
modern facilities like underground electric wiring etc, which are so
far not part of the byepass project.
