Sambu tunnel contract stands terminated
Chitral --
Contract of M/s SAMBU JV at Lowari Tunnel
Project with NHA stands terminated due non
payment of outstanding dues by NHA to the Contractor wef 2nd June, 2011.
Meanwhile, M/s SAMBU JV is engaged with removing
and shifting of their equipment from Lowari to
other places.
This is really sad and bad news for Chitral,
because in democratic government there is no
fund allocated for Lowari. There seems no hope
to restart remaining widening work of the Tunnel.

Comment 1
Except for the Bhutto govt of 1974,
subsequent PPP govts have never been sincere about the
Lowari tunnel. Benazir came to power twice but never
uttered a word about the tunnel. Thanks to Musharraf who
made it happen. In this third PPP rule, not only funds
have been stopped but commuters were prevented from
using the tunnel for twenty two hours a day giving them
only two hours to use the facility, saying work was
going on inside the tunnel whereas actually no work was
going on.--Cheating isn't it, and nobody to ask!
Even at this moment, there is no
reason to not allow travel through the tunnel when it is
lying idle. The only reason is lack of goodwill and
accountability. Tormenting the people and bleeding the
economy by making commuters and goods travel extra two
hours over the 10500 mountain when a tunnel is lying
vacant is good proof of how our country is being run.
Until funds are made available for the finishing and
beatification, at least the floor can be filled with
gravel, and traffic allowed through the tunnel round the
clock. Imagine how much difference would it make to the
lives of Chitralis! --What stops that?
