Muqam downplays Musharraf prospects

Becomes Yet another claimant to Lowari Tunnel laurels

Chitral -- Addressing a large public gathering at Booni, upper Chitral on Sunday, Amir Muqam, the provincial president of PML.Q, said that the former President Gen: (Rtd) Pervez Musharraf was a great leader, but he misunderstood the prevailing political situation in the country. He called his separation from PML.Q an immature and unwise step and said that Musharraf no longer enjoys influential support in the country. He claimed that it was only upon his (Maqam’s) urging that the former president approved the mega project of Lawari Tunnel for Chitral.

The burly politician from Shangla whom once Musharaff  presented his personal pistol as a sign of solidarity with him, said that Musharraf cannot come back to Pakistan, given the uncertain conditions in the country; therefore the people of Chitral should support PML.Q.  He stressed the people to vote for PML.Q in the coming elections, that, he said, is the only political party to lead the country out of the web of crises under the ‘sincere and able’ leadership of Chaudhry Shuja’at Hussain.

The gathering was organized by the local PML.Q leadership and presided over by Advocate Hakim Ali, the provincial vice-president of the party. Other speakers on the occasion included Ghulam Muhammad MPA and Saeed Ahmad Khan district president of the party. They called upon the people to support the well-wishers of the country.

If (let's assume) Amir Muqam made Musharraf launch the Lowari tunnel project, why does he now not make Zardari release funds for it's completion. The situation with him is the same. Then his party was part of the govt, just as it is now a part of the govt. -- Faridul Haq, Chitral, 07 June 2011

The reporter seems to have misunderstood the speech of Amir Maqam .I was present on the spot and carefully listened to the speech. He never downplayed the former president Pervez Musharraf.. Rather he appreciated and praised the unforgettable work of Musharraf regarding the construction of Lawari tunnel. Maqam never said that he was the champion of Lawari tunnel. -- Shakeel Hussain, Booni, 11 June 2011.

Muqam’s speech has not been misunderstood; rather I have left out many other undue claims by him. Please see other newspapers and websites you will find similar reports by different reporters.  What journalists need to do in reporting is to rise above any type of political affiliations. I advise the critics to do the same -- Zahoor Danish, Booni 14 June 2011.
