Golen Gol work
to start from Feb ?
LAHORE, Nov 25, 2010: Construction work on the major components
of 106 MW Golen Gol Hydropower Project will start in February
2011.
Work for construction of Wapda offices and colonies for the
project has already commenced and is at the advance stage of
completion, said a press release issued by Wapda here on
Thursday.
Construction of the dam and powerhouse will be undertaken by a
joint venture SAMBU-SARCO of South Korea, while for the
construction supervision consultancy, financial proposal of a
joint venture comprising MS Fichtner of Germany as lead firm, a
Swiss and three Pakistani companies are being evaluated and will
be finalized soon.
Golen Gol Hydropower Project is a part of least-cost energy
generation plan, being executed by Wapda on a priority basis to
harness the indigenous hydropower resources of the country with
a view to improve the ratio of hydel electricity in the national
grid.
The project is located on the River Golen Gol, a major tributary
of the River Mastuj in Chitral. Saudi Development Fund, Kuwait
Development Fund and the OPEC Fund are providing funds to the
tune of $ 107 million for the project.
On its completion, Golen Gol Hydropower Project will generate
about 436 million units of electricity (Gwh) annually to earn
revenue of about Rs1 billion.
Being an environment friendly hydropower project, it will help
reduce dependence on expensive thermal power, thereby saving
foreign exchange amounting to $34 million (equivalent to Rs2.7
billion) to the country.
According to an estimation, Golen Gob Hydropower Project will
add about Rs9 billion per annum to the national economy through
socio-economic uplift in the country caused by the project.
