Ex GM AKESP's rejoinder -letter

In recent weeks, my services in the AKES,P and my character have been under unfair scrutiny on the Chitral

News based on the information provided by the AKES,P management. Since the discussion has closed, it is appropriate for me to get the facts straight.

On August 24, 2009, I received a ‘show cause’ notice from Nasir Noorani, a department manager which stated as to why I had issued shuttering and block making plates (construction tools) to staff and non-staff members of the community for personal use.  My response was that GMs before me had made these tools available to community members when not in use in the AKES,P system and I simply continued the existing practice.  On September 29, 2009, I received a letter from Sughra Choudhry Khan, the CEO, which stated: “The aforesaid act is deemed totally unacceptable; especially at such level of seniority in the institution… your services are only concluded with benefits.”

The Chitral News report has criminalized my character, both as a senior long serving AKES,P professional and as His Highness’ appointed leader in the Ismaili community by attributing to me words such as corruption, misappropriation, poor performance etc.  Some wrote about my strengths and integrity while others questioned my professional ethics.  Few bitter and disgruntled targeted AKES,P school’s performance forgetting the enormous contribution that the teachers have made and continue to make towards quality education, they are indeed model for their counterparts.  Unfortunately, as their manager, whenever I presented their genuine concerns to the AKES,P management, I found myself despair, isolated and helplessness.

I joined AKES,P, neither through a backdoor nor political blackmailing, but rather on merit with management credentials from the United Kingdom and much valued management experience in the AKHS,P.  During my career, every program, project and opportunity for staff academic advancement and professional development has been implemented.  137 community based schools were established, 55 community based educational societies were registered under the Social Welfare Society’s Act along with M G saving Rs. 44,750,000/= to ensure the schools’ sustainability.  2132 students have passed their SSC examinations from these new set of schools.  Enrolment in AKES schools doubled from 6000 to 12000.  365 students received scholarships from the European Community fund.  267 seismic resistant school buildings were constructed, from Arandu and Asherat to Brughil and Gobor.  Lands were acquired for 2 Higher Secondary Schools and AKU/IED’s PDCC and construction of school buildings were completed.  81 staff finished post graduate studies in education from AKU, NDIE and overseas universities, 21 of them are heading programs, departments, schools as well as PDCC.  The EMIS was introduced in the system and according to the National EMIS, Chitral data is the most reliable.  NPEP report recommended AKES network to be used as a laboratory for innovation and model of community participation.  This brief summary is a glaring proof of my managerial competencies and professional performance.  I am very proud in humility of my achievements.

It was my dedication to my work and untiring efforts to access the communities in the remotest villages of Chitral.  In recognition of my achievements, the Pakistan News International awarded me with the Gold Medal for best performance in extending education to the underserved and isolated poor communities.  These projects and programs would not have been possible without the support of the government departments, local communities and counterpart institutions with which I enjoyed a superb cordial professional relationship.  I am grateful in particular to the leadership of the Ismaili Councils for upper and lower Chitral and their affiliate institutions to honor me and acknowledge my contribution to the education development of Chitral. Last but not least, I deeply appreciate the kind words and thoughts of those who wrote to the Chitral News in support of my integrity.

Termination of GM AKES,P Chitral -letter10

This is in reference to the letters regarding GM AKESP's termination from service. I feel your website has given undue importance to the matter by publishing so many letters about it. Appointments, promotions, terminations etc, are routine matters in organisations and should be looked at, in the same way. After all, when the said GM was appointed, it might have come as a news in the papers of that time but no debate whether the decision was right or wrong had evolved on it then, So why should it, now?  Regardless of the fact whether the decision was right or wrong, verdict of the higher authorities should be accepted wholeheartedly as is the basic norm in any organisation. No person is above an institution and the little I know, AKDN is very kind and magnanimous with it's employees and even has some degree of tolerance for incompetence and corruption when treating it's employees.  So if the step has been taken by the organisation, there must be good reasons with them and we should not debate it.

Termination of GM AKES,P Chitral -letter9

This is with reference to the news of GM AKESP's removal from the service. It was really discouraging for all the AKDN staff in the region. I request all those writers who try to justify this action by some irrational and illogical arguments, to study the role of AKES in Chitral. Zohran is man of vision who promoted female education in Chitral in a situation when nobody was ready to send their daughter out of their house. If today we talk about quality education, this is also because of his efforts in this field. I personally acknowledge him for his achievements and incredible job. I know he is fully satisfied with his services to Chitrali people and I am sure that best future is waiting for him.

Termination of GM AKES,P Chitral -letter8

This is with reference to the subject news item published in Chitral News. I'm disappointed at the way the news was published. It looks as if the reporter or the editor had personal bias against the gentleman. I say we respect our seniors, especially those who laid the foundations of institutions and who can deny from Mr Zohran Shah's contributions; he gave his whole life to the institutions, whether AKHSP or AKESP. I salute him for his commitment, struggle and his devotion. I have strong faith in his capabilities, and I believe thousands of golden opportunities would be waiting his way.

Termination of GM AKES,P Chitral -letter7

This is with reference to earlier letters regarding termination of services of GM AKESP Chitral. Actions speak louder than words. No doubt he was in service with this organization since long time, but the point of concern was the falling graph of his performance. I think he should himself have resigned without waiting for the extreme decision from higher management.

Any way, we wish him good luck. Shah sahib, don’t be disappointed, try your luck elsewhere. The world is always moving. It is part of life. We also pray for your good health and future.

Termination of GM AKES,P Chitral -letter6

Many friends in this forum have expressed their priceless views and suggestions regarding the termination of GM AKESP Chitral. This to a great extent would be prove a road map for the high ups of AKESP in the selection process of a leader for this significant section.  Most writers have not only appreciated the services of the ex GM and also criticized how AKESP have treated him. I think nobody will appreciate such kind of conduct with a man who designed not only the building but enabled it to stand on its feet and it is in full operational position. Now he has been accused for what?  Either it means why did he build it, or it is just to subvert the institute.

Termination of GM AKES,P Chitral -letter5

This is with reference to the news regarding termination of Mr Zohran Shah. I want to take you back when he was appointed as GM AKES,P Chitral at that time most people apposed him but the management preferred him over more talented and experienced people. We all know that during his tenure he did not show any improvement in education in Chitral.

Now I request the management to appoint a talented person because Chitral is a sensitive place. The man who leads such a big organization should firstly be talented and secondly he should be acceptable to all people of the area..

Termination of GM AKES,P Chitral -letter3

The termination news of  GM  AKESP Chitral is not easily digestible. Specially when he was serving in that position for quite a long time and apparently he was doing justice with his job then why did the management of Aga Khan Education Service reach that conclusion and endorse the allegations (which were being leveled against him since long time) and come out with the decision.  Majority of the people of Chitral see this a decision which should have been taken long ago. Any how better late then never .

A head of an institution which is established to provide invaluable services in the education sector, if leveled with corruption charges, then it is no use for him to stick  to that position. It was better to resign instead of waiting for the higher management to take the harsh decision to terminate him from the position  By not doing so he failed to gain the moral support of the people except his personal friends. We the people of Chitral are looking forward that the higher management of Aga Khan Education Service will appoint a well educated and honest person as a general manager to avoid like wise situation in future.

Termination of GM AKES,P Chitral -letter2

The few words which I am going to submit are about the news item appearing in your esteemed online paper about Zohran Shah sahib GM AKESP Chitral Region followed by nice remarks by Saifuddin sahib from Lahore. In this relevance I fully support and endorse remarks of the learned writer.

In my opinion apart from AKESP policy matters, on which I am not going to comment, one thing should be accepted that Zohran Shah is a civilized, well-behaved, well-cultured, amiable, amicable, tolerant and committed, truthful and hard working gentleman, who has done a lot for the development of education in Chitral. If his services are no more needed to AKESP, then some civilized and more parliamentarian language was required to be used instead of termination, as Chitral is known on the globe as a  land of civilized people.

Termination of GM AKES,P Chitral -letter

This is with reference to the news item regarding the termination of the GM of AKES, P Chitral. The world is a strange place. The man who sacrificed his whole life for the cause of female education in Chitral became subject to such an undeserving treatment.

The higher ups of AKES,P should at least have honored the services of a person who despite having had several opportunities to go elsewhere opted to remain with his parent organization with loyalty and commitment. I also have objections to the role of the media as it ignored services of the gentleman wheras news of his termination hit the headlines.

I have known Mr Zohran Shah for a very long time. We also worked together in the same organization for two and a half years. He is a man of superb character and great qualities. He is known for his compassion, empathy and truthfulness. It is unfair to label the allegations of corruption against him. Zohran Sb, we know that you did not do anything wrong. We pray for your long life and you have our full moral support.
