Swat Video Clip & Media -Note

We have received a number of letters on the topic, mostly condemning the act in the video clip while some have termed it as fake and a ploy to bring a bad name to the Taliban. As the discussion is unending and mostly repetition of the earlier views, we close letters on this topic, for now. As for the received letters which have not been published, the reason is because they do not include full address and telephone number of the writer to help us in verification. Please do not resend the letters, Thanks  -Ed. (05 April 09).

Referring to the letter of Mr Bashir Hussain, it is beyond understanding that, if there is such punishment for women without any proof in Islam, it must be discussed in an open forum, not in the kitchen, or behind the walls. Why are we  indirectly supporting this brutality in Malakand division giving it a different name and indirectly encouraging inhuman acts under the cover of Nizam-e- Adel.

I don’t think anyone can favor such a law. How can some one support the deal with inhuman factors like one shown on video clip, no matter it is done behind a close door or in public. It is sheer brutality. The said media did a fabulous job in bringing to light by telecasting the uncivilized act, otherwise it would have been implemented in the whole region gradually.

We should be thankful to the media for opening our eyes well in time. The best about the said news is that, it is based upon the facts and released unedited. We don’t need to set any code of conduct for news to make it a reason to put undercarpet, ground realities.

Swat Video Clip & Media -letter2

With reference to Bashir Hussain Azad’s letter, I fully share his sentiments to the extent that footages of the heinous act of flogging a teenaged daughter of Pakistan was watched by every human being with bleeding hearts. But I very strongly disagree with his contention of the so-called punishment being Islamic.

Does Islam permit awarding such punishments to a citizen of a sovereign state by a non state actor who is powerful than the other because of holding a gun in his hands? To a layman like me never at all. Even Muslim jurists can not term it a legal punishment. What the media has done is not more than unveiling yet another ugly and brutal face of the society. It is important that we should know where humanity stands today. Why the worthy writer should be perturbed over the Media telling the truth and not the heinous act itself.

It is a fact that today we are ashamed once again as Muslims and as Pakistanis.

Swat Video Clip & Media -letter

With bleeding hearts and reeling minds Muslims all over the the world watched the video clip on TV channels, where a teen a teen age girl was being flogged. No body from the Islamic world can disown Islamic punishments which are actually a source of peace and tranquility and ensure the security of every body’s life and property within the society, but there are a lot of question marks about this mentioned clip. The clip was being telecasted all over the world, billions of people watched it, thus the dignity of a woman was desecrated in the media. Is this the true image of Islam? Can we consider such media as a responsible fourth pillar of the state? I feel that media has crossed all barriers of morality and restraint. Our constitution has not promised such kind of unbridled media, which may become the cause of a black spot on the face of humanity. No doubt there are such Islamic punishments for women but the procedure must be different and the punishment must be executed with due dignity.

It seems that there are some hidden hands effectively conspiring to sabotage the peace deal between the  Govt and the Taliban. Media is the most responsible organ of the state, but unique is the case in our country that it doesn’t have any proper code of conduct to function. Now it is proper time for Govt. and media to set together for to adopt a code of conduct. The elders of Taliban movement should turn towards depicting the true image of Islam. What kind of message has been delivered to the world after showing this clip by the Taliban and media?

Terrorists try to spread terror and anarchy within the country by using some private TV channels, which become a cause of weakening of the foundations of the state, so media should constitute a proper code of conduct for itself to avoid such kind of misperception and mishap in future.
