             The Chitrali bazaar of Peshawar

PESHAWAR, 17 JAN 08: A survey conducted by a local news agency has recently revealed in its Urdu publication some current and historical facts about the famous Chitrali Bazaar located in the vicinity of posh Qissa Khawani Peshawar. The news report says that once this Bazaar used to be dubbed as ‘Islamabad Bazaar” some fifty years ago and “Tethi Bazaar” before the inception of Pakistan . During those days the Bazaar was notorious for wrongful business of drugs trade and also housed some brothels, reveals the news report. Some individuals from Chitral with the help of the local administration managed to weed out the wrongful business and paved the way for a few other Chitralis who later on settled here and started their business by introducing the famous Chitrali Patti for the first time. Initially there were only forty shops but the number grew rapidly with time, which stands at four hundred at present

The business is now almost on the verge of collapse in the backdrop of the ongoing military operation in the adjoining Federally Administered Tribal Areas and Swat, maintains the report. The traders are referred to in the report to have stated the apprehensions that scores of Chitrali residents are likely to lose their jobs if the situation persists. The skirmishes in the adjoining areas have badly impacted the supply of products to these areas which previously served as a potential spots for the marketing of Chitrali garments and headdresses. They have also demanded of the government to recompense them for the loss they have suffered so far and have asked the authorizes to issue loans to them without interest so that they may be able to keep intact the fragile business of Chitrali patti, adds the survey. The traders are also reported to have said that unlike the “Qaraquli”of Peshawar they want to preserve the “Kapol” of Chitral from sinking into oblivion. Anyhow, their apprehension can not be overlooked as the “Kapol” is the symbol of the rich Chitrali culture.  (report by Khalid Pervez)
