Musharraf exit welcomed in Chitral

CHITRAL 19 Aug 08: The resignation of president Musharraf spread like wild fire in Chitral. Workers of political parties, lawyers and shopkeepers in the bazaars congratulated each other and distributed sweets to express their glee. Asked as to why were they happy, people in the street and educated people said Musharraf had opened a Pandora's box for Pakistan by selling it's sovereignty to the US, inviting the culture of suicide bombing and ruled the country by delivering Pakistan as a hostage to terrorism.  They said Musharraf came with the pledge of eliminating corruption in politics but instead embraced all the corrupt politicians one by one. He disavowed his pledge of practicing simplicity and austerity and instead promoted unhealthy consumerism according to the agenda of the multinational companies. They said Musharraf always claimed for him  Pakistan was first but actually he meant 'Musharraf first' and his deeds proved that. People said President Gen Musharraf did not resign for the sake of Pakistan but was forced to do so and he has left us a battered Pakistan.

Some people interviewed, expressed sympathies for Gen Musharraf saying he had introduced the much needed Local Govt system which politicians could not dare do and are now conspiring against it. They also paid him tributes for starting the Lowari tunnel project which the politicians had always promised but couldn't deliver. Some people complimented him for taking a firm stand against terrorism, but even such people were not very sure of his actual intentions and they admonished his unconditional supplication to the US.--(GH Farooqi)
