Electricity
protest gets rough
CHITRAL, 01 July 08:
: All roads leading out of Chitral town
were blocked and shop shutters pulled down, while protestors chanted
slogans against politicians when demonstrators from different parts of the
town came on the roads, Tuesday. Earlier in the day the MNA had addressed
protestors saying he was the one who arranged for electricity from Reshun
power station but others were trying to snatch the credit from him. Speakers
castigated all the frontline politicians including the MNA, District Nazim,
and the Provincial Minister for politicising the electricity supply issue.
They said, despite availability of the needed electricity, it is not being
supplied due to infighting amongst the politicians and the rat race amongst
them to take credit for the service, besides inefficiency and mismanagement
in the power supply organisation. The District administration officials,
DCO, DPO etc who came there held prolonged

negotiations with the

and promised to solve the problem in two days, but the demonstrators refused
to budge from the sit in, after which Baton charge and Teargas was used to
disperse the protesting crowds and the roads opened thereafter. On the
previous night dozens of students had staged a sit in protest at the Ataliq
Chowk at mid night, with open books in their hands depicting their inability
to study. --(CN report)
