Rabies injections not available

Dog bite cases show increase in Chitral town

CHITRAL,19 June 08: Some cases of people being bitten by stray dogs have been reported in Chitral town. Rabies vaccines are unavailable with the government health authorities and affectees have to buy them for Rs 3600/- from private chemists.   It may be pointed out that as almost a routine, each year stray dogs appear in good numbers in the town and Bazaar area, many of them visibly diseased. These distressed creatures are neither looked after nor put to rest mercifully by the concerned authorities until there are some bite cases reported followed by loud protests. It is only then that the municipal and health authorities launch a one time operation of eliminating these stray dogs. However it has been observed in the past that after carrying out the first portion of the operation ie quietening the canines, the carcasses are not adequately disposed off. The residents of Chitral town have demanded from the municipal and health authorities to again do the needful without delay to stop dog bite cases from occurring. (CN report)
