Tunneling work resumes
CHITRAL, 18 May 08: Work on the Chitral side of Lowari tunnel resumed on
Sunday when the labourers called off their protest strike demanding from the
Korean construction company Sambu a proper service structure, tehsil
nazim Sartaj Ahmed Khan told this scribe. He said that the labourers on
Chitral side of the under-construction tunnel went on strike four days ago
and were demanding pay and other privileges they were entitled to under the
international labours laws. Four of the strikers were arrested under 16 MPO
by the local administration and sent to the judicial lockup, he said.
The nazim said that labourers on Chitral side (North site) were drawing much
lesser salaries compared to those working on the Dir side and this has
caused tussle between the local labourers and the Sambu company many times
in the past and work stopped on the site. The labourers contended that they
had no service security and can be terminated with a negative nod of the
company managers without any reason while on the South site the labourers
enjoy service safety. He said that the company had not even issued them
written appointment letters for the last two-and-half years despite their
repeated demand. The nazim said that the representative of National Highway
Authority also attended the meeting between the two parties. -- (Zahiruddin)
