Councilors thank Bhutto,
Musharraf for Lowari tunnel:
CHITRAL, 18 Oct 08: A joint session of district and tehsil councils presided
over by the speaker district council Sultan Shah thanked former presidents
ZA Bhutto and Gen Pervez Musharraf as the two benefactors of Chitral with
respect to the construction of the Lowari Tunnel. The house decided to
rejoice and offer thanksgiving prayers on the day the tunnel is dug through

Dental X-ray unavailable in DHQ

18 Oct 08: Dental x-ray machine in DHQ Hospital Chitral is out of of order
for the past long time and patients requiring the service are referred to
the general x-ray which of course is not meant for the job, resulting in

Satellite drone or
UFO?
:
CHITRAL, 17 Oct 08: Some call it a satellite, some call t a drone and some
call it a UFO. Eye witnesses have reported a round
plate of light of about two feet diameter appearing on the south western sky
of Chitral remaining stationary/very slow movement for sometime and then
disappearing to reappear on the opposite horizon around midnight. Eye
witnesses claim to have seen it on more than one occasion around midnight.
The unidentified object could be a satellite amongst the array of satellites
orbiting the skies in this region. --(CN report)

wages 'War of terror' against consumers:
CHITRAL, 17 Oct 08: Ruthless power cuts aka Load shedding in some parts of Chitral town has reached
18 hours per day while some areas where officials etc are located is almost
free from load shedding. Influential people have been give dual lines while
the poor and helpless are left to suffer and curse the government which
claims to be a representative of the poor. Residents of Mooldeh area in the
municipal jurisdiction have threatened to come on the roads if mismanagement in the electricity department is not checked by
responsible authority (if any) --(CN report)
No water on 'Hand Washing
Day':
CHITRAL, 16 Oct 08: United nation's World hand washing day was observed on
15 October. Ironically on that day there was no water in the taps in Chitral
town leaving people with unwashed hands. --(CN report)
Chitrali clears FPSC:
CHITRAL, 15 Oct 08: Mutiullah s/o Faqir Muhammad of Torkhow has cleared the
federal public service Commission amid a very tough competition and has been
appointed as an Assistant Accounts Officer. He was amongst 10 successful
candidates from nwfp out of 650 who appeared--(CN report)
Anti Polio campaign begins:
CHITRAL, 14 Oct 08: A three day door-to-door polio
campaign began in Chitral. It was inaugurated by Khateeb Shahi Masjid
Maulana Khaleequz Zaman. EDO Health Dr. Sher Qayum, Medical Superintendent
DHQ Hospital Dr Nazir Ahmad, EPI Coordinator Dr Inayatullah were present on

One dead six injured in three
accidents:
CHITRAL, 13 Oct 08: A six year old girl Ayesha d/o Shamsuddin r/o Drosh was
over run by a speeding Ghogaiy car at Balach. In another accident a jeep
coming from Gilgit met an accident at Laspur Brok in which three persons M
Aloom, w/o Eesa Khan and Sardar Bahadur were injured. In a third accident a
jeep coming from Rumboor valley met an accident in which three persons
Shamsuddin, Zahiruddin, Syed Ahmad were injured. --(MMAS Kakakhel)

CHITRAL, 13 Oct 08: A brief but strong earth quake jolted Chitral at 1410
hrs on 13 October. No losses were reported immediately.
Forty six marriages were solemnised in lower chitral (between Barenis and
Drosh) on 12 October as reported by our correspondent. some of the
weddings include that of Masroor Ahmad Baig at Bakamak
Chitral town - Son of Mian Maqsood Ali Shah at Rehankot Chitral town - son
of Muzaffar Ali Shah Jan at Syed Abad - son of Aminur Rehman Chughtai at
Drosh. (we regret if we have missed out mentioning other marriages due to
lack of resources to cover the whole area.)

Transport facility for girl
students demanded:
CHITRAL, 11 Oct 08: Parents of students at govt girls degree college Chitral
have demanded that the three buses standing idle at the college be made
operational so that students do not pay exorbitantly for private transportation
as is happening. they accused the college administration of mismanagement
and threatened dire consequences if the provided transportation is not made

DCO stresses on timely
completion of projects:
CHITRAL, 11 Oct 08: DCO Motasim Billah Shah addressing the district
development advisory committee, stressed upon timely completion of
developmental projects in the district. he asked the UC nazims to identify

SHYDO bill payment facilitated:
CHITRAL, 09 Oct 08: Electricity bills payable to SHYDO can now be paid
locally in post offices by residents of upper Chitral instead of travelling
down to the main chitral town for the purpose. This facility was enabled

Chitralis meet Governor:
CHITRAL, 07 Oct 08: A fifteen
member Chitrali delegation led by provincial minister Saleem Khan met
Governor nwfp Awais Ahmad Ghani in Peshawar on Tuesday and presented to him the problems being
faced by them. The Governor recalled developmental work being carried out
particularly the Lowari tunnel ad said stress would be put on repairing
internal internal roads in the district. Students were also a part of the

Football tourney in Karachi:
CHITRAL, 05 Oct 08: A football
tournament was held at Mujahid Baloch Stadium Ibrahim Hydari Karachi. 17
teams participated in this tournament; Final match has been played between
Khuzdar Eleven and Zidan Sports Club of Chitral on October 3rd 2008. Both
the teams were unable to score any goal in the given time. Decision of the
match came through penalty kicks which Khuzdar Eleven capitalised and won

Educationists visit PDC Chitral:
CHITRAL, 29 Sep 08: Heads of Education
institutions of the nwfp visited Professional development center of the Aga
Khan University in Chitral. During their weeklong visit they exchanged views
with PDC staff and visited different Educational institutions along with the
PDC staff where they discussed educational matters and various aspects of

District Nazim flays non
local appointments: CHITRAL, 29 Sep
08: District Nazim Maghfirat Shah has expressed his deep anguish over the
appointment of non-local persons against vacant posts of food grain
supervisor in the food department, ignoring locals with higher
qualifications. He was talking to Journalists here. He termed it unpractical
as non locals cannot perform duties in harsh far flung areas and will remain
absent causing suffering to the people, he said. Mr Shah said that the
provincial government has sent even class-IV employees in certain
departments including the excise and taxation department. He demanded of the
government to forthwith cancel the appointment of non-local persons against
lower grade posts in the district and advertise them afresh for locals only.

'Telenor' service becomes a pain in the neck:
CHITRAL, 29 Sep 08: Telenor
cellular service which has an estimated two third share of the total cell
phone subscribers in the district, has become a pain in the neck for its
subscribers. Its connectivity is most unreliable remaining off air most of
the time and even when connected offers poor voice quality and frequent
disconnections. It may be noted that Telenor is aggressively expanding its
network in Chitral without paying attention to the quality of service to the

JI protest slams govt policies:
CHITRAL, 26 Sep 08: Jamaat Islami
Chitral held a post Juma prayer protest meeting in Chitral presided over by
the district Amir Moulana Ghulam Muhammad. Speakers castigated the
government for almost everything wrong, going on, from essential commodities
price hikes to electricity loadshedding to pro-American policies etc etc.

Minister demands electricity royalty for
Chitral: CHITRAL, 25 Sep 08:
Provincial Minister Saleem Khan has demanded royalty for electricity
produced at Warsak dam hydel station to be given to Chitral so that it
addresses its developmental problems. He said the water comes from Chitral
and gives electricity to the province but Chitral itself is merged in
darkness. He said the 5000 Mw hydel generating capacity of the district
should be exploited. The Minister was talking to journalists in Peshawar.

Suicide bomber carried fake Chitral ID card:
CHITRAL, 25 Sep 08: The alleged
suicide bomber who some days earlier after failing to take a children's
school in upper Dir hostage, was chased and killed by locals along with
another colleague, was not a Chitrali as reported then in the national
press. (CN also reported it). The district Nazim and police sources told
this scribe that on inquiry it was found that no such person existed in Ayun
village and the identity card recovered from his body was a fake one, they

Earthquake jolts Chitral:
CHITRAL, 25 Sep 08: An earthquake hit Chitral
at about 0015 hours on Thursday. The jolt occurring in the wee hours when
almost all are asleep in Chitral, was short but strong. People jumped out of
their beds into the open, asking pardon for their sins from God and reciting
verses from the Holy Book. No casualties have been reported from any where,
till writing of this report. (CN report)
Chitralis too demand Rs 2 Roti:
CHITRAL, 25 Sep 08: Govt has subsidized
Roti (basic bread) and it is being sold at Rs 2 per 100 grams in most big
cities of the country. In Chitral mostly single Roti is not available and a
fractionally larger Roti is being sold for Rs 8. It may be pointed out that
earning sources in Chitral are minimal but the cost of living eg travelling,
heating etc are far more than other parts of the country with the result
that with every passing day, the average Chitrali is sinking deeper and
deeper into the quagmire of poverty. (CN report)
Peace to be maintained, vow Chitralis:
CHITRAL, 25 Sep 08: A meeting in
Chitral of the peace committee presided over by the DCO and participated by
religious, political and civil society members vowed to safeguard peace and
tranquility in Chitral and not allow any body to spoil the same. Speakers
demanded involvement of people in peace maintenance process at the tehsil UC

Eid shopping contained by price hike:
CHITRAL, 24 Sep 08: As usual the
last week of Ramazan witnesses a frenzy of shopping for Eid, but this year
such shopping seems subdued due to unprecedented escalation in prices of all
commodities and Eid specific items like garments shoes etc. Shoppers talking
to Chitral News said they are forced to restrict shopping to only
absolute essentials, lest they fear they may not be able to cover up later

Pearl College Booni
student tops in BA exams:
CHITRAL, 23 Sep 08: The student of Pearl College Booni, Shahida Murad topped
the district in the B.A./B.Sc. examination held by Malakand University by
obtaining 423 marks out of 550. In the B.Sc. Part-I examination, two real
sisters Uzma Sher and Sania Sher of City College for Girls Chitral obtained
209 and 208 marks out of 285 marks while Fozia Aziz of the same college also

Loadshedding menace persists: CHITRAL,
21 Sep 08: Unannounced loadshedding at Sehri and Iftari is only going on in
Chitral whereas in the rest of the country it has ceased due to directives
of the government. six to seven hours of continuous loadshedding is also a

Boy ends his life: CHITRAL, 21
Sep 08: According to police station Mulkhow a young boy Hajibur Rehman son
of Faiz Muhammad resident of Kosht jumped into the Chitral river and ended
it all. Hajibur Rehman 22 was frustrated due to poverty and joblessness.
His dead body could not recovered from the river until filling of this
