Earthquake jolts Chitral: Chitral,  06 Sept 08: An earthquake of 5.7 temblor shook Chitral at 11:47 local time (05:47 GMT) Saturday. According to the meteorological office, the earthquake was centered about 300 kilometers (180 miles) north of Peshawar in the Hindu Kush mountains in Afghanistan, and the earthquake struck at a depth of 174 kilometers (108 miles). No reports of any damage had been received till filing of this report --(CN report)

 

DCO checks profiteers: Chitral,  05 Sept 08: Acting upon the complaints of consumers, District Coordination Officer Chitral Mutasim Billah Shah carried out  surprise raids on various markets of Chitral town and booked 19 shopkeepers especially butchers, poultry sellers and green grocers for over charging. Cases were registered against those who were  over charging for  bread, poultry meat and vegetables, under section 3/6 of Food Stuff  Control Act (FSCA). -- (GH Farooqi)

 

Seminar on empowerment of women folk held:  Chitral,  03 Sept 08: A seminar on empowerment of women folk of the society and awareness creation was held at Booni  organized by Easy & Equitable Access to Justice Program for Women of Chitral (EEAJP) funded by TORCAIRE Ireland. The participants demanded for establishment of Human Rights Monitoring Committee (HRMC) in far-flung and remote areas of Chitral like Boroghil, Yarkhun, Brep, etc which are not easily accessible. --(GH Farooqi)

 

Ramazan begins with power, water, outage: Chitral,  02 Sept 08: The first day of the holy month of Ramazan 2008 was marked with electricity and water outage at sehri,, with the result that many depending on the traditional wakeup hooter missed their sehri meals. Similarly the Angarghun water supply to the town was also not functioning at sehri time and many missed their morning prayers because of this. --(CN report)

 

PSPCC members notified: Peshawar 01 Sept 08: The Home and Tribal Affairs Department has notified names of the National and NWFP assemblies lawmakers as members of the District Public Safety and Police Complaints Commission (PSPCC). From Chitral, Shahzada Muhiuddin MNA and Ghulam Muhammad MPA, are the nominees. --(The News)

 

Seminar on role of AKDN:  Chitral, 01 Sept 08:  A seminar on 'Role of Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) in Sustainable Development' was organized at Booni, by Ismaili Regional Council and ITREB Upper Chitral in connection with celebrations of the  Golden Jubilee of HH prince Karim Aga Khan. Chitrali attends Asian youth congress seminar: Chitral 30 Aug 08: Ahmad shah a Chitrali youth belonging to Parabek Garam Chashma was amongst the two youth selected for attending a drug prevention seminar held in Bali Indonesia. The other was Haris Mehmood from Islamabad. The two will attend another similar seminar in Afghanistan.  --(MMAS Kakakhel)

 

Ramazan preparations in Chitral: Chitral 30 Aug 08: With only a couple of days left for the holy month of Ramazan (fasting) to begin, the Ramazan mood has already set in, in Chitral. Most plans / activities have been put on hold till after the holy month is over. Eateries, restaurants etc are planning to shut down while street vendors of fried food like samosas pakoras pickles etc are preparing to set up stalls. Besides the inevitable Karrhi, Fried food, pickles and dates are  favourite items during Ramazan for breaking fast with. while fermented cheese ( Teer pandeer) is considered an essential dish for the sehri (pre-dawn meal)  --(CN report)

 

Privilege motion referred to committee: Peshawar, 29 Aug 08: The NWFP Assembly on Thursday referred a privilege motion on the inauguration of a development scheme completed by the provincial government to the concerned committee.The motion was tabled by MPA Ghulam Muhammad, who informed the house that on July 5, ADO Chitral invited the district Nazim for the inauguration of a development scheme completed by the provincial government. He said the inauguration of the provincial development scheme was the right of the MPA of the concerned area and, therefore, complained that his privilege had been breached. Speaker Kiramatullah Khan Chagharmati, after seeking the consent of the house, referred the motion to the concerned committee. --(The News)
