Corruption probe in irrigation dept

CHITRAL: Member National Assembly Shahzada Mohiuddin has alleged that the higher authorities of the irrigation department were involved in corruption.

Talking to the media here on Sunday, he said that the provincial chief secretary had ordered an inquiry into the alleged bungling in the department and a team of the anti-corruption officials had reached Chitral.

He said that the executive engineer and sub-divisional officer of the department had been transferred from the district ostensibly to protect them, although he had reportedly asked the high-ups of the department not to transfer them till completion of the inquiry.

The law-maker from Chitral said that irrigation channels in the district could not be completed properly due to alleged corruption in the department. He asked the chief secretary to cancel transfer of the accused officers forthwith.--Dawn (25 may 09)
