Changing times, strange ways
Chitral -- Must have heard the English proverb of 'taking coal to
new castle' but here in Chitral a new proverb was phrased yesterday
when a shepherd was seen buying vegetable ghee to take with him to
the mountain pasture for his and his colleagues consumption, thus 'daldao
chey milk pack gani ghaario tey bik' is the new Chitrali idiom.
Gone are the days when Chitralis would look towards the mountain
pastures (where their cattle would be, during summer time), for milk
products like ghee, cheese, pandeer, phenak, maska, shuphinak, kilal,
abada, etc. Times have changed so much now that the shepherd is
heading for the market to buy artificial ghee.
When CN asked the peevish shepherd why so, he said he is
preserving the pure ghee to sell it at a higher price in the market.
He also contended that pure ghee could not be digested by him as he
is used to the artificial cooking ghee available in the markets.
